How is Botox® used to treat the masseter muscle?
The masseter is a muscle found in the jawline. Sometimes individuals find their masseter muscle is very strong due to the repetitive nature of the muscle, such as the chewing of food, gum, or simply repeatedly clenching of teeth. If this muscle is very strong it can influence the shape of the face. Some women do not like the shape of their chin as they feel it is a more chiselled masculine shape. This is usually caused by a strong masseter muscle making the face more angular.
Botox® can be injected into the jaw to relax the muscle, therefore shrinking the muscle. Over a short period of time this can change an individual’s face shape, smoothing and creating a slimming effect to the jawline due to it being less angular or square.
Masseter Botox® can also help to reduce, or even stop, teeth grinding (or Bruxism to use the medical term). Masseter Botox® can also be used to treat tension headaches, which arise from the tight clenching of the jaw.
How do I know if I have a strong masseter muscle?
When you clench your teeth the masseter muscles bulge out on each side of the face. You can feel them working by pressing into your cheeks gently when clenching and releasing your jaw or teeth.
If you feel that your jawline is too square then masseter Botox® can be used to make the face shape more oval, bringing attention more to the cheekbones and eyes.
Masseter Botox® treatment
During treatment of the masseter muscle with Botox®, we will ask you to clench your masseter muscle, so that the treatment is delivered directly into the muscle. For this reason, your muscles can sometimes feel a little tender for a couple of days after treatment when they are clenched.
No anaesthetic is required with this treatment and you are able to return to your normal routine straight after. Please note some light swelling or bruising can occur for a few days post treatment. This is completely normal and will disappear on its own. Your Aesthetics Life clinician will advise you on post treatment care.
