What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the medical term for teeth grinding and jaw clenching. Bruxism can be the result of stress, anxiety, or sleeping problems and can be an unconscious act.

Symptoms of bruxism

Bruxism does not always cause symptoms; however, some people do experience some pain or stiffness in their masseter muscle (located in the jawline). Other symptoms of bruxism include facial pain, headaches, earache, disrupted sleep, and worn down or damaged teeth. The teeth damage usually happens over time, such as the weathering of a rock.

How is bruxism treated?

Bruxism can be treated by injecting Botox® into the masseter muscle, located in the jawline. This treatment relaxes the overactive masseter muscles and can help to reduce and eliminate the muscle tension pain associated with this condition. Masseter Botox® treatment can also help to slim and smooth a chiselled or square jawline. Patients with bruxism often find their jaw can be squarer as their masseter muscles work excessively, and so become stronger, giving their jawline a more masculine appearance.

Talk to the Aesthetics Life team today to see how Botox® masseter treatment can help you to slim the masseter muscle and as a result is likely to help you to stop grinding your teeth.
