What is Depressor Anguli Oris (DAO)?
The depressor anguli oris, often shortened to DAO, are the muscles attached to the edges of your lips, and they produce the jowls of the face. Over time from overactivity, even when not moving your mouth or lips, the corners of your mouth have a tendency to point downwards, resulting in marionette lines and an unhappy looking appearance.

This overactivity can be treated using precise administration of Botox®* into the DAO muscles. These anti-wrinkle injections can be used to prevent lines from deepening, or to soften existing lines. During the initial consultation we will discuss the options and create a bespoke treatment plan, going over the benefits and possible side effects. We’ll take a few ‘before’ photos for you to compare the before and after results once the treatment has finished.
During the DAO Botox® Anti-Wrinkle Treatment
For the DAO muscles, we often use Botox®*, a botulinum toxin that was designed specifically for aesthetic purposes that is MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved. The active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A relaxes muscles.
After the DAO Botox® Anti-Wrinkle Treatment
After the treatment, the positive effects of the treatment should be visible immediately, especially when compared to the ‘before’ photos. The effects of this treatment will last typically around 4 months. Most people can return to their normal daily life immediately after the treatment. Try to avoid touching and keep the area clean. Also, try to sleep on your back facing up. You might experience slight side effect inconveniences in the treated area, such as swelling or mild bruising. These side effects typically only last between 1 and 3 days.
