How does botox work?

Dr Singh who runs his botox clinic in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in his latest blog shares his thoughts on what botox is and what it is not.

What is Botulinum Toxin Type A and how does it work In this blog I will be discussing the use of Botulinum Toxin A (Botox®) as a muscle relaxant. It’s essential to have a firm understanding of what it is exactly and it’s mechanism of action as your patients will ask you and they may have some misconceptions about it from their friends and the media. Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox®) is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. To my patients I explain it is a purified protein and comes from bacteria similar to antibiotics. In addition I explain it is like any other medicine, in correct low doses it’s therapeutic and in high/dangerous doses its toxic. Numerous studies have been conducted to confirm the safety aspect of this drug.

In simple terms Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox®) interfere with neural transmissions by blocking the release of acetylcholine, the principal neurotransmitter at the neuromuscular junction, causing muscle paralysis. This is why the effects are temporary as the nerve begins to branch out to send new nerve ending to the muscle to tell it to move. The greatest misconception clinicians have is they should inject into the muscle, however the biggest benefit is obtained from aiming for the neuromuscular region.

Currently there are 3 types of Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox®) available for aesthetic treatments: AbobotulinumtoxinA – Azzalure®; Galderma Incobotulinumtoxina- Bocouture®; Merz Aesthetics OnabotulinumtoxinA – Botox®®; Allergan In the rest of this article I will be talking about Azzalure® which is a registered trademark of Galderma and is indicated for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines seen at frown. You can still administer it for the forehead and eyes but it will be off licence in these two areas. My preference for Azzalure® is due to its fast onset, long duration of action and high level of patient satisfaction. The potency of Azzalure® is measured in Speywood units and these are specific to its preparation and are not interchangeable with units of other preparations.

I am not easily impressed, I have been a repeat client of Harry for over 2 years and would not hesitate to recommend him for botox treatments. He has a an absolute understanding of the need to build trust and to understand what is important to me as a botox client. I have absolute trust in him and the advice and treatments I have received have been faultless. I have had repeated compliments on my complexion and on how well I look since receiving the botox treatment so I think that speaks volumes in itself. Thanks Harry!

I have visited Aesthetics on numerous occasions for a range of facial aesthetic treatments, including botox and each time have found Harry and his entire team of staff to be professional, welcoming and friendly. Botox® treatments have been explained clearly and fully and I have always received an excellent standard of care. The journey all the way from East London is well worth it! I have no hesitation in recommending Aesthetics to my family and friends as it excels in all aspects fpr your botox needs.

Professional Botox® Service all round and great patient satisfaction

I would recommend Dr Harry Singh for anti wrinkle treatments, such as botox injections , he did a great job in administering the appropriate amount of botox for the designated area. A good adjustment follow up in the following two weeks, that is an important factor when choosing your aesthetic practitioner follow up and re adjustment after 2 weeks not everyone offers this inclusive package.

I have been going to Aesthetics for the last 2 years for facial treatments, which include botox injections. I am very happy with the botox results, and would recommend Harry Singh, and his highly trained team. I am always made very welcome, and find it a Very relaxing and enjoyable experience.

Botox® – why so popular?

Dr Singh who runs his botox clinic in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in his latest blog shares his thoughts on why botox is becoming so popular and the trend is going upwards.

Botox® treatments is a growing trend and there are no sign of it slowing down. During discussions wit my patients on why they have chosen to have botox injections they comment and say they wont consider surgery because of the higher costs involved, the increased asociated risks, and the extra downtime required after the procedure. As dentists, it is the perfect opportunity when carrying out dental cosmetic treatments such as teeth whitening or teeth straightening that we can look at the whole ace as one and compliment other dental treatments. In addition as experts in the facial anatomy and injection techniques its a no brainer fro dentists and their patients to work together to perform botox treatments.

Lets dig deeper into the reasons why non surgical treatments such as botox has increased.

The main reason is the speed of the process and also the recover period after the botox procedure. I have many patients that attend at lunchtimes and then immediately go back to work after the botox.

The botox is relatively affordable (my patients know how much is needed for a year and therefore can budget accordingly, as I will give them a 2 year plan during the assessment).

Subtle – botox can give a natural look if used in the correct doses and concentration. Most of my female patients are undertaking the treatment for themselves, and the majority don’t tell their husbands or their mums so want a natural look that no one else can tell that they have had the botox procedure.

Botox® is a relatively comfortable procedure since we use small needles, and at worse they may feel a very slight pinch,

Botox® combinations

Dr Singh who runs his botox clinic in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in his latest blog talks about different options in combination with botox.

Many patients may originally visit us for botox treatments and this in the majority of cases is the best choice for them. However there are some that botox is not suitable whether this is due to cost or another reason. This does not mean that we cannot offer something of value to them to improve the appearance of their fine lines and wrinkles. One thing to consider is that botox alone may not give the desired result and that they may need extra procedures to achieve their goal.

For example, what we do is, when people have three areas of of botox which is for the forehead, frown and eyes. They may also benefit in having botox injections in other areas of their face such as smokers lines, bunny lines, etc.

Then there is the cross-sell. This is where is you talk about a different services in addition to the botox treatments. So if they came for botox treatments, then you can talk about, if you’re a dentist, teeth-whitening which will complement your botox treatment. Also if they came for loss of volume, as a dentist in the privilege position, we can look in their mouths, see if there’re any gaps, and talk about implants or bridges to restore those caps which will help them for some lost volume.

Then finally there is a down-sell is where they came in maybe for a consultation for botox, but decided not to go ahead with it, and then you can offer them something of a lower price, for example, some sun protection. Say, “Okay. You’ve got some fine lines and wrinkles. Here. If you’re not too sure about botox treatments at the moment – it may be something that you consider later on, it’s important, vital and critical for your skin to have adequate sun protection and this is what we recommend.”
