Dr Singh who runs his botox clinic in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in his latest blog talks about how safe is having your tear trough treated.

Many patients are concerned with the appearance of their lines or skin directly under the eye. Once they have seen me for botox in the upper third of the face, their eyes get automatically drawn to the eye area.

Botox® is not given directly under the eyes as there is no muscle there. So we would normally look at some type of filler. The skin is very thin so we have to be careful which filler we use.

There are some major structures around the eye, so a detailed knowledge of the anatomy needs to be understood before a practitioner starts thinking about treating this area.

A common area that patients want correcting is the tear trough region. This sometimes becomes hollow. This is die to the bone under this area resorbing as we get older and then the skin following this bone.

Patients comment on stories that have seen or read of people going blind after having their tear troughs treated. This can happen, but is extremely rare. Other complications can include, but are not limited to, swelling, bruising, redness, lumpiness and itchiness.

My treatment protocol is always to under treat the tear trough area with filler and then review later where more can be added. In addition if you have over corrected a particular area, you can inject here to breakdown the filler.

The good thing about most non surgical facial aesthetic treatments such as botox and dermal fillers, are that they are temporary, nothing is permanent. Therefore we can correct things or allow time to correct any potential complications.
